In 1881, a small group of devoted Catholics formed a community of faith in Penfield and eventually built the original St. Joseph’s Church — the little Church on the hill. Today, the Church building is no longer there but the legacy of those who have gone before us remains in the sacred space of our holy burial grounds.
St. Joseph’s Cemetery is the final resting of the faithfully departed who helped to build the thriving St. Joseph’s parish. Located at the corner of Penfield Road and Liberty Street, in the heart of Penfield, the Cemetery is a visible testament to our mission: to witness to the love of Jesus Christ in the world.
“I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.” John 11: 25-26
Availability
A beautiful reminder of God’s creation, the tree-lined setting offers both traditional casket burials as well as a cremation garden. Plots currently are available for both forms of Christian burial in several different areas. Many of these plots are near and around the original site of the Church on the hill.
St. Joseph’s Church supports the maintenance and grounds improvements to the Cemetery through the generous donations of parishioners.
Choosing a FInal Resting Place
To get a sense of our cemetery, we invite you to take a walking tour. Draw deeply on the history of St. Joseph’s from the 1860’s to this very day.
Take a moment to sit and pray. Spend some quiet time with the Lord and the memory of those who have gone before us. St. Joseph’s Cemetery is a place to pray and remember all that God has given us.
Reflect on where you choose to be buried when your time comes to go home to the Lord. Would you like to rest here among others who have been cornerstones of our parish family?
“Lord Jesus Christ, by your own three days in the tomb,
you hallowed the graves of all who believe in you
and so made the gave a sign of hope
that promises resurrection even as it claims our mortal bodies.”
